"The severe cyclone storm Vardah is now located about 180 km east of Chennai and is heading west towards Chennai and will likely cross near Chennai this afternoon," said S Balachandran "Over the next 36 hours, precipitation will occur in many areas north of the Tamil Nadu coastline in Pondicherry, Chennai and Tiruvallur," the IMD official said.
